Can You Use Stone Panels in the Shower? A Maintenance and Waterproofing Guide
Specifying natural stone panels for showers, wet rooms, and steam showers — substrate prep, sealing schedule, and recommended stones.

Yes — natural stone panels work beautifully in showers and wet rooms when the substrate is properly waterproofed and the stone is correctly sealed. The failures we see in older stone bathrooms almost always trace back to substrate water intrusion or the wrong stone choice, not the panel itself.
Substrate. Cement board with a fully bonded waterproof membrane (Schluter KERDI or equivalent) is the minimum. Carry the membrane up the wall to at least 6 inches above the showerhead and tie it into the curb and floor membrane.
Stone selection. Dense marbles (Calacatta, Statuario, Volakas), quartzites (Taj Mahal, Cristallo, Patagonia), and granite-family stones perform best. Avoid the most porous travertines for steam-shower applications unless honed-and-filled and aggressively sealed.
Sealing schedule. Apply a penetrating fluoropolymer impregnator before grout/joint sealant, again after install, then re-seal annually for steam showers and every 2–3 years for standard showers.
Cleaning. Use pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Vinegar, citrus, and most bathroom sprays will etch marble.
Backlit onyx in showers. With waterproofed LED housings rated for wet locations, backlit onyx in a shower niche is one of the most striking moments in a luxury bathroom.
